AN INITIATIVE OF THE FLORIDA LAND MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

Prescribed fire is an essential land management tool to:
-
Without fires, trees are stressed by overcrowding, fire-dependent species can disappear, and flammable vegetation builds up and becomes hazardous.
-
Prescribed burning effectively reduces flammable vegetation and other hazardous fuels, which lead to extreme wildfires.
MITIGATE CATASTROPHIC WILDFIRE
-
It helps protect and improve the habitat of Florida’s fish, wildlife and plant populations, including many native species that are at risk such as the red-cockaded woodpecker, Florida scrub-jay, gopher tortoise, Eastern indigo snake, Godfrey’s butterwort, scrub plum and Rugel’s pawpaw.
-
Prescribed fire helps prevent the conditions that generate catastrophic air quality issues and put communities and individuals at increased health risk.
SUPPORT FLORIDA'S WORKING AGRICULTURAL LANDS
PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT AND OUR AIR QUALITY
-
Prescribed burning is an important tool in managing the land on which we grow the food that feeds our country, the fiber that we wear on our backs and the timber that we use to build our nation.
-
Periodic fire recycles nutrients back into the soil.
-
Prescribed burning can reduce or remove threatening, invasive pests and disease that pose risks to our domestic food supply.
